Initial situation

Initial situation

Since 2012, the Altstadtparkhaus car park in Kiel's city centre has been the starting and finishing point for a visit to the old town. With its attractive exterior façade, it blends in well with the city centre and is an important part of the urban design and development. The project was commissioned by the client, Hochtief Solutions AG, in 2012 in response to the need for "more parking".

The concept

The concept

The design of the building is based in particular on the neighbouring NDR building in order to ensure that the building blends harmoniously into the old town environment. Typical North German clinker bricks and modern steel louvres characterise the attractive façade of the car park. For the sake of the environment and against excessive power consumption, we have developed a column-free construction. This leaves plenty of space for generous glass cut-outs and views into the individual levels of the car park. The column-free architecture of the car parks and entrances is typical of WÖHR+BAUER garages and, in conjunction with the modern increase in vehicle size, promises adapted parking space widths of 2.50 metres.

The result

As well as providing an attractive car park in the old city centre, with easy entry and exit thanks to its column-free architecture, the car park offers free and customer-friendly additional services. These include shoe shine machines and buggy hire for children.
A two-colour durable coating on the parking levels protects the building fabric, preserving the longevity and value of the property. The car park offers easy visual orientation, smooth and seamless parking areas. By providing 'more parking', it makes an important contribution to the urban development of the surrounding area.
