Initial situation

The prominent entrance to Messestadt Riem on the former airport site has been a wasteland for years - dominated by the old control tower, a relic of the aviation era. The fact that the former workplace of air traffic controllers is a listed building makes the development of the site a complex undertaking. After three tenders, the City of Munich was still without a solution when it contacted WÖHR + BAUER.

The concept

The concept

WÖHR + BAUER responded to the urban planning challenge with the concept of a visionary headquarters building that integrates the historic tower into modern architecture. At the same time, the dynamically growing medical technology company Brainlab was looking for a property for its headquarters. Together with a suitable tenant, WÖHR + BAUER developed a concept to create a landmark building for the young trade fair city at a highly symbolic location.

The result

After three years of planning and construction, the new Brainlab headquarters is opened in person by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The result is a building with exceptional architecture that gently embraces the tower and integrates it with glazed pedestrian bridges.

With a prestigious lobby, modern catering facilities, attractive open spaces, a fitness studio and flexible room concepts, the office worlds meet the requirements of successful employers who are measured worldwide by the quality of their recruited talent.

The Brainlab Tower will be developed as a showroom for high-tech medicine with fully functional operating theatres. In the event area above, a futuristic sky lounge offers an unobstructed view of the mountains and Munich's surroundings.

As Brainlab AG is a technology leader in imaging surgical systems, production and workshops will be located alongside offices and medical departments for research and development.

The development of the area around the Riem Tower closes the prominent urban development gap at the entrance to Messestadt. The city's leadership is highly satisfied with the result: "The innovative design of Brainlab's new headquarters is a sensible use of the site that is in keeping with its status as a listed building," said the current mayor, Dieter Reiter, in his former role as economic advisor, at the signing of the lease in March 2014.

From the first meeting to handing over the keys, we found WÖHR + BAUER to be a competent partner with a deep understanding of our needs. The result: a tailor-made property for our company.

The fact that you have managed to integrate museum objects like this airport tower into an ultra-modern company is the Bavarian laptop and lederhosen in action, as the inventor of the saying probably always wanted.
