Initial situation
Before the new synagogue and Jewish centre were built, St. Jakob's Square had long been neglected in terms of urban development. Administrators and politicians sometimes refer to the area between the City Museum, the Angerkloster monastery and a dilapidated multi-storey car park as an 'inner-city dumping ground'. The City of Munich has a clear ambition: to develop the site's hidden potential as part of the construction of the new synagogue.
The concept
The concept
WÖHR + BAUER's concept for a mixed-use townhouse is a convincing solution where an old multi-storey car park used to dominate the scene. The idea was to move cars underground to create space for a variety of compatible uses - also for the benefit of the surrounding area. This includes thinking about traffic and open spaces around the building - including an additional pedestrian zone.
The result
WÖHR + BAUER is realising a multi-purpose townhouse: in the tradition of European city centres, 'Der Angerhof' reflects the colourful diversity of urbanity behind its characteristic terracotta façade. From the four-storey underground car park to shops and restaurants on the ground floor, contemporary art in the inner courtyard, modern offices and penthouses with roof terraces at the top. For its exemplary revitalisation of a brownfield site and successful integration of different uses, Der Angerhof was nominated for the 2009 MIPIM Award in Cannes in the Business Centres category.
